Explore the intersection of art, nature, and science in Decoherence, an immersive exhibition by artist Robin Speth. Inspired by a concept from quantum mechanics, Speth examines how everything in the natural world exists in a state of constant flux, shaped by its environment, from the shifting light on leaves to the underground networks connecting trees and shrubs, and even the subtle movements of pollinating insects. On display at Matthaei Botanical Gardens. Free and open to the public.

I love to explore. Wandering around the forest, or creeping through the alleys and fields of near my home in Detroit is what brings me joy. That sense of discovering the unknown is powerful. It is the same in art. Every so often I find a mixture of peace and exhilaration within the act of creation where I am vitalized—I feel so alive. I explore the depths of both canvas and mind, gradually carving out forms, and stumbling upon subjects until an image appears. It is an unexplored and uncontacted world that I get to discover. For those who view my work, I hope they find a reflection of themselves or their experiences. That connection is where art can help heal and inspire growth.
Using the mediums of airbrush painting and drawing, I can create images relatively rapidly. This speed helps to capture the energy behind a piece that can sometimes be lost when labored over for too long. Generally, my work explores change over time. I find the topic of change, growth, and evolution, incredibly fascinating because it is a phenomenon that we all experience but never get to see. We wake up and were older, or the flowers in the yard have opened. We never get to see those moments in-between.
Artist Bio
The dense natural beauty, wide array of inhabitants, combined with the academic might of the university make Ann Arbor, MI a very unique place. Growing up there laid the perfect foundation for my artistic career, exposing me to a wide range of spectacles and experiences. For undergrad I ventured down the road to the College For Creative Studies in Detroit, receiving my BFA in Product Design. However, while there, I discovered a great love for drawing, painting, and sculpture, leading me to pursue a career in fine arts. Since graduating, I am a practicing artist in the city of Detroit, participating in shows, leading workshops, and painting murals. I am eternally grateful for this life and the people who’ve made it possible.
