Alex Dow Field
Explore a remnant prairie and savanna ecosystem as well as adjacent oak woods to see Michigan as it was around the time of settlement. Many of these species are extinct from the region.
Main Valley
The Main Valley in Nichols Arboretum has rightfully been called the “Heart of the Arb.” The Arb’s landscape was planned in 1906 and developed this majestic verdant space offering iconic views.


Magnolia Glade
Trees with big leaves and fragrant flowers define Magnolia Glade. Hardy magnolias from the Appalachians, Asia, and ornamental hybrids among them form the collection’s framework.
Oak Openings
Oak openings serves both as a display and for propagating plants for use in other restorations throughout the Arboretum.


River Landing
River landing is an attractive destination year-round. This is a popular location for bird watching, canoeing, fly-fishing access, people-watching, picnicking, reading, and sunbathing.
Schoolgirls' Glen
Make aquatic friends, see a pollinator garden in action, make stories in an amphitheater, stroll rustic trails, and build creations with nature's elements in the Fairy and Troll Knoll.
