The aged yet sinuous corky bark is both highly desired and testifies to age - this tree is likely approaching or over a century old. The generations of skilled and continuing care result in a tree that is pleasing to view from almost every angle. The nuances of the branching so it is angled to the viewer attests to the current ‘front’ being developed over decades.
Ulmus parvifolia is native to China, Japan and Korea, where as a forest tree it grows to 50 (even 70) feet tall. In North America it is grown as an unusual ornamental tree where its flaky bark can be appreciated. The corky bark dramatically accented here is occasionally seen in trees in nature, and is a prized in bonsai. This bonsai was donated by Dr. Melvyn C. Goldstein in 2021.
