This satsuki azalea ‘Kaho’ is the cover image for the Winter, 2023 issue of Bonsai, the journal of the American Bonsai Society. In fall, 2022, it won the Silver Cup and Blue Ribbon in the Professional Division at the Mid-America Exhibit in Chicago. Among its accolades is “... one of those rare trees … dramatic and yet holding the regal, weighty presence that only true age can convey.”

Satsuki azaleas belong to Rhododendron indicum, an azalea species that is endemic to the mountains of Japan. ‘Kaho’ is one of the selections prized for its beauty when trained as bonsai. This specimen was donated by Dr. Melvyn C. Goldstein, who purchased it in Japan in the fall of 2013, and continued to train it to the tree we appreciate today.
