Stewardship, conservation, and community impact
As stewards of more than 840 acres of purpose-driven dynamic natural systems and collections, Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum crafts futures that honor the past and prioritize the sustainability of our ecosystems for generations to come. Initiatives such as native plant conservation, oak regeneration, improving and caring for our vast public and research collections, maintaining biodiversity through seed and rare plant conservation, and implementing emergent best practices in ecosystems services and management are at the forefront of our efforts. These are not only crucial for ecological balance but can drive public impact and faculty or student integration.
A tangible link between the community and the richness of UM's natural resources, Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum actively cultivates natural futures through four core endeavors:
Public and research collections care at Nichols Arboretum, Matthaei Botanical Gardens, the Campus Farm, Horner-Mclaughlin Woods, and Mud Lake Bog
Native plant and ecosystems restoration, particularly Oak regeneration at the Arboretum
International and Indigenous seeds and rare plant conservation efforts
Ecosystem services and best management practices for public impact
