The Resiliency of Oaks: Nichols Arboretum Nature Rx Day

-

This year is a White Oak tree masting year! Masting years are when trees like oaks synchronize acorn production and produce far more fruit than the animals that depend on them can reasonably eat. This abundance of acorns provides tons of food for squirrels, mice, and other acorn-eating animals. In turn, this increases the success of hawks, foxes, and other animals that depend on acorn eaters for food. It also helps regenerate oaks for the future. This amazing natural phenomenon happens periodically and is deeply tied to healthy, resilient ecosystems. Humans benefit too; we enjoy the cooling shade of oaks, find beauty in their form, and use oaks for fuel and timber. Join Natural Areas manager, Jeff Plakke, for a guided walk in the Arb and learn how White Oaks are critical to the biodiversity of species in a healthy ecosystem. Plant up an acorn to grow your own white oak at home!
