Then & Now: We’re digging into our past and reflecting on the many changes our properties have gone through.
After the conservatory was completed in 1965, Matthaei Botanical Gardens welcomed faculty, students, and visitors to the facility that featured a tropical, temperate, and arid house. With its desert plants such as cactus and succulents, the arid house was a center for exploration of a climate very different from our own.
Today in the arid house some of the desert plants almost reach the ceiling! Our aloe collection has grown remarkably from this photo from 1994–this recent photo shows a much bushier version.
See the conservatory in its full glory Tuesday through Sunday, no reservation needed.
