Two Great Locations, One Organization

Check out the programming offered by the Ann Arbor Bonsai Society this summer. Most programs are free unless noted otherwise. Don’t miss the annual bonsai show sponsored by the Ann Arbor Bonsai Society in August. Programs held Wednesday at 7 pm except for the bonsai show (weekend).

Wednesday, May 22, 7 pm, Matthaei Botanical Gardens
Bonsai Carving Techniques with Bruce Baker
Bruce will discuss and demonstrate carving techniques. He will also be discussing a Japanese Yew, Taxus cuspidata, which he styled, and which was named Best of Show in the Mid-America Bonsai Exhibition at the Chicago Botanic Garden in 1987. It now in the Matthaei collection and was exhibited last year at the National Bonsai Exhibition in Rochester, NY. Bruce is a long-time member of Ann Arbor Bonsai Society, and specializes in carving deadwood.

Wednesday, June 26, 7 pm, at matthaei Botanical Gardens
Care and Training of Eastern White Cedar with John Wall
John will style a collected Eastern white cedar, Thuja occidentalis, and discuss care and training of this species. John has been practicing bonsai since the age of 10, but really became serious about the art in 2003. A lover of wild collected trees, John has worked with everything from stunted evergreens from the western mountains to deciduous trees from the southeast. John has an eye for design and loves dramatic and unusual trees. He has shown in several U.S. Nationals and in the prestigious Artisans Cup in 2015. In spring of 2018 John won an American Bonsai Society John Naka award for his collected white cedar. Visit his social media page.

Eastern White Cedar Workshop with John Wall.
Participants will style collected Eastern white cedar. Cost: $175/person.

Wednesday, July 24, 7 pm, Matthaei Botanical Gardens
Bonsai Critique with Michael Hagedorn
In this will be a seminar-style meeting participants bring in trees they have questions about and Michael gives commentary. Formerly a respected bonsai potter, Michael studied with sensei Boon Manakitivipart, and apprenticed under Shinji Suzuki of Japan. He now operates Crataegus Bonsai in Portland, Ore.

Wednesday, July 25, 7 pm, Matthaei Botanical Gardens
Bring Your Own Bonsai with Michael Hagedorn
Bring your own tree workshop structured as a “maintenance” workshop as opposed to a “creating” workshop. People should bring several trees in order to have flexibility in what they actually end up working on, based on Michael’s assessment. Cost: $75 per participant.

August 24 & 25, 10 am-4:30 pm, Matthaei Botanical Gardens
Ann Arbor Bonsai Society Show and Sale
Share the tradition of the practice and art of bonsai at the Ann Arbor Bonsai Society annual show at Matthaei Botanical Gardens. Bonsai display, vendors, expert advice, and demonstrations. Admission: $3 per adult; under 12 free.

Two Bonsai Programs with Jerry Meislikann arbor bonsai society
Program to be determined. Jerry is an honorary life member of the Ann Arbor Bonsai Society, now living in Montana. He is an internationally recognized expert on Ficus bonsai, and is the author of many articles and the book Ficus – The Exotic Bonsai. He has exhibited and taught extensively in the United States. Several of Jerry’s trees can be found in the Matthaei collection. Visit  his website.
