African Cherry has been used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia. This condition causes the prostate gland to enlarge, constricting the urethra and making it difficult for the bladder to empty. Pygeum bark contains compounds which exhibit anti-inflammatory actions in the prostate. Over harvesting in the wild this species is considered Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
