Be sure to visit the Bonsai & Penjng Garden on your next visit to Matthaei Botanical Gardens. This outdoor garden displays two dozen or more bonsai from our large and growing collection of more than 70 trees. The pavilion serves as a demonstration and learning center for bonsai volunteers and visiting bonsai artists such as Bjorn Bjorholm, who worked on some of our trees this June.
The collection began in 1977 with a gift of core specimens from the estate of Dr. Maurice Seevers, a former director of the University of Michigan Department of Pharmacology and an ardent bonsai lover. It continues to grow with donations of bonsai from collectors and bonsai experts.
Student intern Mackenzie King took these photos recently of the Bonsai & Penjing Garden in August and from June when Bjorn Bjorholm visited.
