One sign of spring at Matthaei Botanical Gardens & Nichols Arboretum is the red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus). Around Willow Pond at Matthaei the RWB is usually heard first and seen second, especially in the morning. The RWBs begin to appear as early as mid-February. This year they started arriving around the first of March. We are happy to see them! Spring might finally be around the corner.

Photographer John Metzler frequently visits Matthaei-Nichols and other nearby natural ares and parks to capture nature scenes, seasonal changes, and wildlife. He recently shared with us some amazing photos of birds spotted at Matthaei Botanical Gardens. Thank you John!
