Updated September 21, 2020:
COVID continues to have an impact on our operations.
The conservatory, gift shop, and display gardens at Matthaei—including the Gaffield Children’s Garden—are currently closed. Additionally, all in-person events and outreach activities will continue to be postponed until further notice.
The trails at both Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum remain open for public use, daily sunrise to sunset. Please wear face coverings and abide by social distancing whenever using our trails.
Like all other public-facing departments at the University of Michigan, we coordinate our plans and policies with the U-M. At this time, the University’s priority is to support students’ return to campus and in-person instruction. When those goals are achieved we will work with the U-M to ensure we’re ready for you to visit safely. That date is still not known. As soon as more information becomes available we will update this page and other Matthaei-Nichols communications channels. Thank you very much for your patience and understanding during these uncertain and unpredictable times.
Parking at Matthaei is now enforced. Please use the parking kiosks located at the main entrances to the Matthaei building and in the parking lot by the Campus Farm. Matthaei-Nichols members enjoy free parking. Follow instructions on the kiosks and enter your member number. Two porta-potties were recently installed at Matthaei. They are located along the main drive near Willow Pond and by the Campus Farm near the hoop houses visible along Dixboro Road by the south entrance to Matthaei.
NOTE ABOUT NICHOLS ARBORETUM:
Portable toilets are now available
The visitor center is closed
We are not issuing permits for the spaces in front of the peony garden on Washington Hts.
When visiting the Arb or Matthaei, please observe the recommended distancing of 6 ft for your safety and that of other visitors, and wear a face covering. Read Univ Michigan updates here.
