Two Great Locations, One Organization
We’ve been getting questions about our spring and summer events, especially the peony garden in Nichols Arboretum.
The 2020 peony garden bloom celebration is canceled. We are asking everyone not to visit the peony garden. The peony garden becomes very crowded during bloom season, and the side pathways in the garden are very narrow. With our visitors’ safety foremost, we ask everyone to please enjoy the bloom season online this year.
  • No bathrooms or water fountains
  • The visitor center is closed
  • There is no designated Arb/peony garden parking at this time. We are not issuing permits for the spaces in front of the peony garden on Washington Hts.
  • Visit our virtual peony garden resources
  • we will not be updating the peony bloom tracker

Additionally, all events through August have been canceled or suspended. This includes the peony sale, Shakespeare in the Arb, the June blooming bonsai azalea exhibit, Things with Wings, and our August native plant sale. In the meantime, we are doing our best to bring you online content about the peony garden, bonsai exhibit, and Shakespeare in the Arb. Matthaei Botanical Gardens remains closed for the foreseeable future. This includes the Matthaei buildings, conservatory, gardens, and gift shop. The trails at both Matthaei and Nichols will continue to be open from sunrise to sunset, and parking at Matthaei is free during this time. When visiting the Arb or the Gardens, please observe the recommended distancing of 6 ft for your safety and that of other visitors. Read Univ Michigan updates here.
