Matthaei-Nichols Prescribed Burn Crew Volunteer Training

Matthaei Botanical Gardens
1800 N. Dixboro Rd
Ann Arbor, MI 48105 United States

October 11 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Cost: Free
Prescribed fire is a tool we use to restore and maintain natural areas at Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum (MBGNA), and is an essential part of the oak-hickory forests, oak savannas, and prairie ecosystems. This process enables us to re-establish and protect these ecosystems as well as the many species that inhabit them. For thousands of years, Native American burning created fire dependent ecosystems that rely on frequent fires to maintain their plant communities and open character.

The training will provide a basic knowledge of prescribed fire as a restoration tool, and basic volunteer duties.

A flexible weekday schedule is required for this volunteer position. Prescribed burn crew volunteers will be on call every week day during the spring and fall from approximately 1-4pm, as burning is heavily dependent on weather conditions.

All new volunteers are highly encouraged to attend and will be required to fill out a new volunteer application.
