W.E. Upjohn Peony Garden celebrates its centennial year in 2022. Matthaei-Nichols staff have a longstanding connection with the American Peony Society, an organization that brings peony lovers from across the country together. Jointly, it was agreed that the magnificence of celebrating the 100th anniversary of the W.E. Upjohn peony garden could only be heightened by bringing the APS national convention and cut flower show to Ann Arbor for the weekend of June 4 and 5, 2022 for the public to enjoy.
The show features hundreds of cut flower varieties, including rare cultivars and new peony hybrids. While some exhibited blooms are entered by growers, a majority of flowers on display are cultivated by home gardeners. Audiences can expect to see award-winning blossoms judged on the cultivar’s form, color, texture, condition and perfection. An additional component of the show is the artistic design competition, where designers fashion peony floral arrangements with an eye to both tradition and modernism. Whether you have a longstanding love of peonies, or are new to the blossoms, the cut flower show will be an opportunity to take in the beauty, the science and the significance of this remarkable plant.
The American Peony Society’s Cut Flower Show takes place at Matthaei Botanical Gardens on Saturday June 4 and Sunday June 5 from 10am-4:30pm. Free admission.
