Membership dollars go to supporting many incredible things at Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum – including our summer interns! These summer internships provide students with real-world experience in horticulture, research, curation, conservation, field services, visitor engagement, administration and much more. Interns work on impactful projects at the gardens and arboretum while taking advantage of career building learning opportunities. Here are some interns sharing their experiences at Matthaei-Nichols and thanking members for their invaluable support.

Dear Members,

I would like to extend immense gratitude and thanks for your support of the gardens, arboretum, and interns like me. I am currently a student at the University of Michigan pursuing degrees in Conservation Biology and Art & Design. When I’m not in class, I tend to my porch garden of tomatoes, ferns, and herbs. I love to practice film and digital photography, cooking, and soap making. This summer, I hope to explore more of the gardens and arboretum, while learning how I can use my talents and drive to contribute to non-profit organizations like Matthaei-Nichols.

Your support has allowed me to secure an internship at Matthaei-Nichols that is teaching me how important it is to foster communities around conservation. Working as a Development and Administrative Intern has given me the opportunity to combine my passion for conservation and photography; as I learn how to use my photography as tool for membership and community outreach. I have already learned so much about connecting individuals with the environment.

After graduation, I hope to use my skills from this internship to work for more non-profit environment based organizations. I want to find creative solutions that impact how we create a greener earth. This internship has been an essential piece to developing my practical and professional skills, and it would not have been possible without your support. I am overjoyed that people like you display such generosity. Your contributions to conservation, education, and environmental stewardship will help me pass on that same generosity in my future.

Please accept my sincere thanks for your support.

Matthaei-Nichols Members and Individual Donors,

I have had an absolutely amazing time serving as a Visitor Services Intern at Matthaei Botanical Gardens this past summer! Thank you so much for everything you’ve done to make this learning opportunity possible for me and other interns.

I went into this position thinking that it would be a summer internship—it paid and it seemed educational and fun, so a good way to spend my vacation. Little did I know I would learn skills (and make friends) that would last a lifetime. Between working the front desk and hosting various events from kids’ birthday parties to weddings, I was busy this summer and I grew as an individual.

This Visitor Services position has taught me the skills to interact with people on a professional level and given me the passion to help make a person’s day go just right. I learned from my coworkers and supervisors how to best represent Matthaei Botanical Gardens by ensuring the satisfaction of a customer or a bride on her wedding day or how to brighten a child’s day with a fun activity!

As an art and design student, working in Visitor Services taught me very useful skills in interacting with people on a personal level and with the general public. I know that everything I learned throughout the course of this summer will stick with me for the rest of my life and allow me to get a leg up in the working world. Thank you so much for making this possible!
