Over the past weeks, I watched in horror at the killing of George Floyd and others such as Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor.  For me personally, it brought back painful memories of being a teenager in Memphis, TN when Martin Luther King, Jr. was brutally murdered.  The struggle then as now was about institutional racism that has plagued our country from its beginning.  It is clearly time for long-overdue action.
As Director of Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum, I am committed that we condemn all acts of racism and discrimination and welcome all to enjoy the solace that our gardens and wild spaces offer.  We continue working to insure that all in our community have access to our spaces that are even more valued and needed during periods of uncertainty and stress.
As part of the University of Michigan, we pledge our unwavering commitment to values celebrating diversity, seeking equity and justice, and insuring inclusion for all people.
